Elenbarathi Lindenuindagno o Morn Sigil, called Elen Spirit Singer, was the Healer, Bard, and Shaman of a small exiled band of Grey Elves of noble blood who had settled in the far Northern forest, in a place known as Taur i Morn Sigil, or Midnight Steel. She was 625 years old when her Clan was destroyed in a blood-feud, five centuries before her story began in Beware.
Her natural power is to make spirit-connections through music and dreams; this is greatly enhanced by the harp she made and consecrated to spirit-magick as a young maiden. She has much practical knowledge of herbs and first aid, but her main healing power is psychic in nature. With the harp, she can heal madness, memory-loss, and spirit-possession, ease pain and sorrow, calm fear, bring sleep or forgetfulness, and awaken hope and energy. Her music catches the attention of helpful spirits and draws them to her; she can also ward a place from entry by spirits and some magickal beings.
When Elen's Kinsman Kharas Crist-Erui, called Edge First Sword, was slain, she with her harp followed him into the death-realms and attempted to sing him back. This was the greatest magick she had ever attempted, and it did not work as planned. The harp "saved" both her corporeal form and that of Edge, but she could not pass the gate of Death's black Keep, and thus became A dream whisper, a memoryless ghost on the wind. So she remained until 500 years had passed, and then she met V'soul by the Lake of Sorrow. Through her bond with him she became corporeal once more in the Cave of Souls.
Edge First Sword also awakened from his death's sleep and regained his corporeal form as Elen sang the spellsong in the Cave. He fought his way out of the Black Keep, defeating the death-warrior, a soulless automaton, who barred his path, but as he did so, at that moment V'soul carried Elen and her harp through the plane of Limbo and the Limbo-forces affected the harp's magick. Half of Edge's soul was transferred into the death-warrior and their aspects were exchanged; Edge left the death-realms in the form of one of its armored guardians, while his shadow (Duath, "shadow" in Sindarin) remained behind in the Black Keep.
Elen lived peacefully in V'soul's Castle of Platinum, visiting the prime material realms by means of the Rune of Returning he gave her: a blue-white diamond necklace that has the power to transport her and anything (or anyone) she holds to and from his Castle. She was also given a pendant by Bahamut Father of Dragons, which protects her spirit from being overwhelmed by contact with the spirit-magick of others. After V'soul left to fulfill one of his contracts, she grew homesick for her own forest, and had his servants, the weavers, build a treehouse for her there.
Meanwhile, Edge, his memory shattered, had made his way back to Midnight Steel along with his great white companion-beast Cataclysm, and taken up residence in the caverns behind the waterfall there. On Elen's second evening in her treehouse, drawn by her singing of the spellsong, he came to investigate, and the two met. Edge fled in confusion when Elen called him by the name he had borne in life; as a result of having looked into his eyes while not wearing the dragon-pendant, Elen's spirit-form was pulled back along the path she had traveled before, into the death-realms where Duath waited.
With her living spirit there, Duath was able to leave the death-realms, though only as an incorporeal being. He returned to Midnight Steel, hunting Edge, but was trapped inside Elen's harp when Azriel, Servant of the Bones took it from the treehouse. During that time, Duath discovered and was severely affected by the Limbo magick spreading within the harp, his presence also accelerating its effect. Azriel gave the harp to the Druid Barnabus, who released Duath from it but kept the harp, as he had promised Azriel he would do.
Both V'soul and Azriel traveled to the death-realms, seeking Elen's spirit-form. V'soul battled the death-warriors, found her, and took her spirit back to her chambers in his Castle, but without her harp, his servants were unable to fully re-unite her soul and body. He sent one of the weavers to capture Duath at Midnight Steel, hoping to learn the location of the harp... the Elven wraith, on the verge of madness from the effects of the Limbo magick, resisted the interrogation, but at last, learning that Elen still lived, told V'soul what he wanted to know. Obtaining the harp from SummerGold, into whose care Barnabus had given the harp, V'soul woke Elen from her sleep... but, her spirit bound to the harp, she was increasingly affected by the chaos-magick of Limbo within it.
After his encounter with Elen at Midnight Steel, Edge disappeared. He sought a way to return to the City of Dust, but was unsuccessful, and so, traveling ever westward with his great white companion-beast Cataclysm, he made his way slowly back to his forest home... unaware that V'soul, believing he had torn Elen's spirit from her body, had sworn to kill him on sight. Duath waited at Midnight Steel, his intangible ghost-form unable to leave the place of his death. With the help of principE de la Sombra and his princesa, whose lands border Midnight Steel to the south-east, he hoped to enter the body of an Elven warrior slain in the battle of The Storming, and so live as a corporeal being once more.
Edge came at last to Midnight Steel, and there encountered Elen and Duath. Elen played the spellsong, meaning to make it possible for Duath to enter the harp again, that she might thus transport him to the Shadow Prince's home at his request... but the Limbo magick within the harp caused it to explode, killing Elen, and merging Edge and Duath into one being, Eternal Knight.
Upon learning of Elen's death, V'soul, in a murderous rage, came to Midnight Steel to avenge her. He and Eternal Knight, each holding the other responsible for what had happened, fought a vicious battle, until principE de la Sombra arrived to intercede. He persuaded V'soul to take Elen's body back to the Castle of Platinum to have the weavers try to resurrect her. Eternal Knight followed V'soul into the plane of Limbo, but the chaos-forces there split him again into two beings: Edge, severely wounded from the battle, and Duath, once more an incorporeal wraith.
With the help of the dragon Black Crystal Nova, Edge and Duath escaped from Limbo and returned to Midnight Steel, where the healer Lhiannan tended Edge's grievous wounds. Meanwhile, in V'soul's Castle, his servants the weavers performed the ceremony to reconstruct Elen's broken harp and soul, bringing her back to life, but... changed, with some of the characteristics of a water-spirit, and with her innate magickal abilities enhanced.
Returning to her forest house, Elen found Edge near to his death with fever, and healed him. Duath, wary of her at first, suspecting some evil sorcery on her, at last accepted that she was really herself, and so the last of Echad Morn Sigil were reunited, three rather than two.
By accident, Elen discovered that she can breathe underwater, and questioned one of V'soul's servants about this, but did not understand the cryptic images that the strange black-shrouded being showed her by way of answer. V'soul himself had vanished; Elen learned from the weavers that his planestaff had been stolen from him by the Darkshadow family, leaving him stranded within the Prime Material Plane. She instructed the weavers to search for him and bring him back to the Castle of Platinum, but he did not return - whether because the weavers could not find him, or for some other reason, she has no way to know.
Elen became friends with Dresdan D'kalect Starstorm, the young Queen of Noldoria, and helped her to organize an alliance of mutual aid among those suffering under the Dark occupation of the realms of Beware. She took the position of Guildmistress of the Healers Guild of the alliance, and in the course of her work there, began to discover the extent to which her healing skills had been enhanced by the weavers' magick. But even with her greater power, she could not restore Edge's ability to speak, nor fully mend the wounds he had taken from V'soul's soulblade. Restless, haunted by the memories he could not grasp, Edge took to wandering far afield by night, returning home only when Duath came through shadows to find him - until the night he could not be found at all.
The woodsman Shaanan Steel discovered his unconscious body in the snow, carried him to warmth and safety, and sent word to Taur i Morn Sigil that he had been found. Elen and Duath came with all haste, only to find his spirit fled, his body dying even as they watched. In desperation, over Duath's objections, when all other magick failed to revive him, Elen sang again the spellsong... the empty body rose and merged with Duath's incorporeal form, becoming Eternal Knight once again... but the half-soul that is Edge did not return.
Trapped within the black mail of the death-realms, unable to resume his former state without Edge, Duath contends alone against the soulless slayer that shares his being, while the living part of the body he wears slowly grows weaker for want of food and sleep. Yet still he will not allow Elen to ask aid of V'soul's servants for him, nor to leave her body and attempt to journey again in spirit-form into the death-realms - so she can only watch, with hopeless sorrow, while once more her last beloved Kinsman fights a battle she knows he must eventually lose.
