Edge

*A tall, slender figure clad in what looks like black leather pauses at the treeline and gazes out with eyes of silent starlight. He wears a cloak of dark fur around his broad shoulders, and a wild mane of silken hair the color of the night sky cascades down his back. The undergrowth ripples, and noiselessly his great white companion-beast Cataclysm comes to his side, moon-gold eyes gleaming in the massive feline head.*

He is Elven, but not quite... something else as well, something darker. For long, he did not know even his name, or where he came from; speech and memory lost... he was a creature of the wood, living only in the moment. Yet his dreams were troubled... dreams of a waterfall in the green depths of the wilderness, a cave in a gray limestone cliff, a song that called him by the name he had forgotten. So he traveled ever westward, stopping only to hunt, and to sleep beside his immense white-furred friend. Finally he arrived at Taur i Morn Sigil, and knew that he was home.

In the treehouse there, he met Elen Spirit Singer, and recognized her as his Kinswoman... then met the Shadow-Lord Duath in the forest twilight and recognized him as... himself. The magick of the Harper's spellsong, that once called a slain Warrior back from the City of Dust, worked once more, but again the spell went awry, and though Edge and Duath merged as a single being - Eternal Knight - the harp exploded from the strain, and Elen Spirit Singer fell dead.

He does not remember this... does not remember her death, nor the desperate battle against the fearsome being that came out of the mists to avenge her, nor the chaos-magick of the plane of Limbo that tore him once more apart from Duath, his soul's other half. He woke, badly wounded, on the forest floor where once long ago the last Sword of a noble House fell dying. With Duath's help he climbed the ladder into the treehouse, and then knew nothing more until he awoke again, stitched and bandaged, unable to rise.

Elen, restored to life by the weavers' magick, returned to her forest home to find him there, and healed him of the fever that almost killed him. The warm closeness of his bond with Duath was a comfort to him, and the wounds to his body mended enough that he could walk once more, but those of his spirit lingered still. He who had forgotten all the speech of Elves and Men in a dream of endless green wilderness struggled to recall the words he once knew, and the life that was once his... though the ending of that life loomed like a locked iron gate across his mind, and he had not the key.

Restless, haunted by the memories he could not grasp,he took to wandering far afield by night, returning home only when Duath came through shadows to find him - until the night he could not be found at all. The woodsman Shaanan Steel discovered his unconscious body in the snow, carried him to warmth and safety, and sent word to Taur i Morn Sigil that he had been found. Elen and Duath came with all haste, only to find his spirit fled, his body dying even as they watched. In desperation, over Duath's objections, when all other magick failed to revive him Elen sang again the spellsong... the empty body rose and merged with Duath's incorporeal form, becoming Eternal Knight once again... but the half-soul that is Edge did not return.
